Who doesn’t love the combination of peanut butter and chocolate. It’s such a classic combo! So obviously adding peanut butter to hot chocolate is a no brainer, right?
I think this peanut butter hot chocolate recipe is the best because it only takes 5 ingredients and less than 10 minutes to make. It’s also incredibly easy to scale up for a crowd or down for just one person because the measurements are so easy.

Here’s what you’ll need:
Milk -Whole milk is my choice for a rich and creamy flavor that can hold up well to the addition of chocolate and peanut butter, but feel free to use your choice of dairy or dairy free milk such as oatmilk or almond. Just be sure that you’re using an unsweetened version.
Unsweetened Cocoa
Chocolate Chips– You can use semi sweet or milk chocolate chips for this hot chocolate recipe. Semi sweet chocolate will result in a dark chocolate taste.
Peanut Butter- Just make sure it’s creamy peanut butter! You don’t want chunks of peanuts sinking to the bottom of your cup!
Powdered Sugar- this recipe uses powdered sugar to get the sweetness just right. I prefer using powdered sugar over granulated sugar because you don’t have to worry about it being grainy at all.
Does Peanut Butter even melt?
Yes! The peanut butter and chocolate chips will melt and blend completely into the hot chocolate for smooth sipping. Depending on the brand of peanut butter you use, you may find some peanut sediment in the bottom of your cup after drinking however.
Step by Step stove top instructions:
- Add the milk to a sauce pan and whisk in the remaining ingredients.
- Heat over medium heat whisking constantly until the peanut butter and chocolate chips have completely melted and the mixture is smooth. Do not bring to a boil.
Microwave instructions by the mug:
Please note, these instructions are for a single cup.
- Add the ingredients to a heat proof mug and stir well.
- Heat at 50% power for 90 seconds. Stir.
- Heat again at 50% power for 90 seconds and then stir again.
- Let the hot chocolate sit for a minute or two, stir again and serve.
Not all microwaves have the same wattage, your microwave may cook more quickly or more slowly. The goal is to heat the hot chocolate slowly, but evenly so that the peanut butter and chocolate both melt without coming to a boil.
